Our national infrastructure deficit is a pressing concern for all Canadians, and I know that with a skyrocketing population we feel it every day in Willowdale. In June, I co-hosted the first-ever tripartite Willowdale Transit Consultation, showcasing the new relationships we are building with our partners in government. The federal government is committed to paying its fair share of the full cost of transit investments and it is imperative that we work in concert with the province and city to deliver solutions now.
I am very pleased that the Government has laid out a historic plan in Budget 2016 to invest more than $120 billion in infrastructure over the next ten years. Well-planned investments in infrastructure generate economic growth, support communities and leave a lasting legacy for Canadians. Infrastructure is not an end in itself – it is the means with which we build a more prosperous and sustainable economy and country.
We are starting immediately with $840 million to be invested in the TTC under Phase 1 of our plan – part of $3.4 billion slated in this year’s budget for modern and reliable public transit.
